What I learned. Top 4 Importance of Catalogers Work environment and difficult conversations Homeschooling and outreach Libraries are an experience

Catalogers play a crucial role in providing patrons with access to resources. Transitioning from Dewey to a more user-friendly cataloging system enhances the experience for patrons. Combining elements of Dewey with a general topic system appeals to me. Ensuring the catalog is user-friendly and error-free brings satisfaction to both staff and patrons. Bringing these ideas back to the library and implementing them is the next step.

Work environment and difficult conversations:Communication in the workplace fosters a positive environment and reduces misunderstandings. Creating a safe zone during work meetings to address concerns is crucial for team morale. Effective conversations prevent larger issues from arising. Maintaining clear communication within the team is essential. Organizing team-building activities and training sessions with snacks. (Everyone loves food) A joyful team leads to a joyful library and joyful patrons!

Homeschooling and outreach:Underrepresented Community Here are some ways to provide support: Contacting homeschool book publishers to include sample books in the library Offering programs for homeschoolers during typical school hours at our library Hosting events where we visit homeschool groups to provide educational sessions Conducting library tours for homeschool groups

Libraries are an experience:Libraries offer a unique experience for our patrons, especially in a world where technology is prevalent. Post-COVID, there is a growing desire for personal interactions. People seek to disconnect from devices and engage with others, finding solace in the interaction and experience provided by library staff. Customer service and creating a positive library experience are crucial. Through technology, our library can provide experiences to patrons both on-site and remotely. It's essential to ensure a seamless experience using our website and social media platforms, making them accessible to everyone. Hosting online events caters to those who prefer to participate from home. Experience extends beyond the library walls, embracing technology to engage with our community.

Author meet-and-greets:I enjoy reading books, but I don't always feel a personal connection to the authors behind them. Exploring the backgrounds and inspirations that drive authors to write has been a fascinating experience. It has enriched my perspective on books, leading me to view them in a more profound light. Many of these authors have a strong bond with libraries and books, which inspires me to believe that as a librarian, I may be nurturing the future generation of writers. It's truly an incredible experience that sparks thoughts about what it would look like to write my own book.

Favorite part : Inauguration of the New ALA President It was an incredible experience to witness a powerful woman with indigenous roots assume the role of president at the ALA. Meeting new individuals and connecting with librarians who, like me, feel underrepresented was truly inspiring.

A big thank you to the Library of Michigan for the Improving Access to Information Grant Program (medium grants) and to Bath Township Public Library for providing me with an amazing experience.
